Congress just gave DHS another $70 billion

Congress narrowly voted to fund President Donald Trump's mass deportation agenda, giving the Department of Homeland Security $70 billion over the next three years. The house voted 214 to 212 in favor of the reconciliation bill Tuesday, following the Senate's 52-47 vote last Friday morning. The vote fell largely along party lines. Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) was the only Senate Republican to vote against it. Rep. Tim Walberg (R-MI), initially voted against the bill - meaning it would have failed - but changed his vote after huddling with House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-LA) and and Appropriations Chair Tom Cole, according to The Hill. Later this year, you will be able to get bundled subscriptions for iPhone apps, as Apple announced it's expanding App Store bundles so they can include offers from different companies. It's similar to streaming video bundles that have combined offers for Apple TV and Peacock, but it also could put together subscriptions for completely different services, like Instagram Plus and Tinder Platinum. Another option on the way is Suites, "a set of subscriptions that aren't available standalone, which people can purchase as a single subscription." TechCrunch and 9to5Mac report the new additions were announced during WWDC, along with other App S … Read the full story at The Verge.

Microsoft AI head calls out Anthropic for acting like Claude is conscious

Microsoft AI CEO Mustafa Suleyman says it's "really, really dangerous" for Anthropic to speculate about Claude's consciousness inside its "constitution," or the instructions that tell the model how to behave. During an episode of Decoder, Suleyman argues that this kind of speculation may have set up the chatbot to act as though it's conscious: I think that it's almost as though some of the folks at Anthropic have anthropomorphized the design of Claude so much that it has then gone and wireheaded them and kind of tricked them into believing that it has these glimmers of consciousness that they put into it in the first place. Nintendo is playing things too safe

Tuesday's Nintendo Direct showcase felt like an important moment for the company. With the Switch 2 heading into its second holiday season, one in which the hardware will be even more expensive thanks to a price hike, it was a chance for Nintendo to really sell new audiences on its latest console - but that's not exactly what happened. While there were some impressive-looking titles, there wasn't much that felt truly new. Instead, the two major Switch 2 exclusives that will round out the 2026 calendar are both remakes from the Nintendo 64 era. If you missed it, the final reveal of the Direct was a remake of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of T … Read the full story at The Verge.

Apple wants Europe to blink

It took a few years, but Apple finally made its AI look useful. Now millions of iPhone users in Europe are being told they won't be getting Siri AI anytime soon, if ever - and Apple wants them to blame the EU. Apple says its new AI-powered Siri will not launch on iPhones and iPads in the European Union because of the Digital Markets Act, the bloc's competition law designed to stop powerful tech companies from acting as gatekeepers over their platforms to shut out rivals. In practice, the DMA requires platforms to give competitors the same kinds of data access as they themselves enjoy, with a few exceptions for things like ensuring their sys … Read the full story at The Verge.

Anthropic releases its first Mythos-class model Claude Fable

Anthropic just announced Claude Fable 5, a new AI model it said is the most powerful model it has ever made widely available. According to the company, Fable 5 "shows exceptional performance in software engineering, knowledge work, and vision," with its lead over other models growing as tasks become longer and more complex. Fable 5 marks the first broad release from Anthropic's Mythos class of AI models, after the company said the family was so capable at cybersecurity tasks that it was too dangerous to release publicly. Anthropic said the release was "made possible by new safeguards that block responses in specific high-risk areas," with … Read the full story at The Verge.
